Word 2007 may offer fewer chances to customize things than earlier versions of Word, but that doesn't mean that you utterly lack ways of modifying Word's appearance. One method of customizing the program to your needs is to make changes to the Word 2007 status bar and the settings displayed there.
Word's status bar is an extremely useful strip of informative tidbits and controls, lurking at the bottom of Word's screen. Right-clicking the status bar produces the helpful Customize Status Bar menu, shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1: The Customize Status Bar menu.
The Customize Status Bar menu does two things. First, it controls what you see on the status bar, informational tidbits as well as certain controls. Second, it lets you turn on or off some Word features. Keep the following in mind when working with the Customize Status Bar menu:
- Choosing an item from the menu doesn't cause the menu to disappear, which is handy. To make the menu go away, click the mouse elsewhere in Word's window.
- The menu's options are enabled (selected) when a check mark appears next to them.
- The items at the top of the menu display information about your document. You can also choose to have that information displayed on the status bar by choosing one or more of those options.
- The options from Caps Lock down through Macro Recording are used to turn off or on those features. (Selection Mode is the F8-key feature.)
- The last three items on the menu control whether the View or Zoom shortcuts appear on the status bar.
