Adjusting Backlight and Brightness on a Zune

Adapted From: Zune For Dummies

You can adjust the backlight and brightness of your Zune display by heading to the Zune Display setting. To get to the Settings screen, follow these steps:

1. Hold down the Back button to pull up the main menu (if you're not at the main menu already, of course!).

2. Press the Down button until the Settings item is selected in the main menu and then press the OK button.

The Settings menu appears.

Now you're ready to adjust the backlight and brightness.

The backlight on your Zune provides the illumination necessary for you to see what's on the screen. It takes power, so you can make it shut off automatically while you're playing music to save the battery. The Backlight setting determines how long you want to leave the backlight on when you browse through music or pictures. (The backlight stays on continuously when you're playing video.)

You can toggle the Backlight setting to 1, 5, 15, or 30 seconds, 1 minute, or Always On.

To change the amount of time the Backlight stays on, follow these steps:

1. In the Settings menu, choose Display and press OK.

2. Select Backlight.

3. Press Enter to change the Backlight value.

The value of the Backlight setting changes each time you press the OK button.

4. Set the value to an amount of time you're comfortable with and then press the Back button to return to the main menu.

The timer for the backlight resets when you use the Up, Down, Left, and Right buttons to navigate the menus. If the backlight shuts off before you finish reading through the items you're looking at, change the Backlight value to something higher so you're not interrupted.

In the Zune world, brightness refers to the brightness of your actual Zune display. The Brightness option lets you toggle between Low, Medium, and High.

To change the brightness of your Zune display, follow these steps:

1. In the Settings menu, choose Display and press OK.

2. In the Display menu, choose Brightness.

3. Press OK to toggle through the various Brightness values.

The screen brightness changes immediately to reflect your selection.

4. After finding a selection you like, press the Back button to return to the main menu.

The higher the brightness of the display, the faster your battery runs down. Also, if you use your Zune outdoors a lot, a higher brightness can make your Zune easier to read in bright sunlight.
